Volunteer Tutors Making a Difference at Hanover Elementary

RSVP of the Capital Region volunteer tutors Howard Powell and Larry Coghlan are making a difference with students at Hanover Street Elementary School in Hanover. Howard helps third and fourth graders in need of reading improvement, and first grade students by reviewing basic sight words with them. One fourth grader remarked: “Mr. Howard is a great, smart guy.” Another student said: “He is a smart man who taught me how to spell.”

Larry has been at the school two years, assisting students with math skills and homework they don’t understand. Teacher Jobie Bolden stated: “Larry has been a great resource for students that need an extra hand.” One student loved having him because Mr. C is fun to work with and loves doing homework with him.

Principal Pamela Smith loves having both tutors, whose true value is in their commitment to the school’s students and the relationships they establish with every child. The students benefit greatly from the consistency of their visits and the support they both provide from each of them. If you are retired or just looking for something to do that will make you smile, become an RSVP volunteer role model for our Hanover Street Elementary students. Howard lives with his wife in Dover and Larry lives with his wife in Hanover.

RSVP, the nation’s largest volunteer program for adults aged 55 plus, works with volunteers to help match their time and talents with volunteer positions in the community.
